Monday Mailbox: List of FindMyPast Collections Not in LDS Subscription

The Ancestry Insider's Monday MailboxDear Readers,

Thank you for so many responses to my article on this subject a couple of weeks ago. (See “Correction: LDS Member Accounts Don’t Include all Collections.” Several of you provided lists or links to lists of the collections not included in a Find My Past LDS subscription. (By LDS Subscriptions, I mean the subscriptions provided to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.) The list appears to be changing over time, mostly getting longer. Perhaps that is why FamilySearch doesn’t provide the list through their support organization.

I’ve taken what appears to be the most current list and spot-checked to see if it is correct. I few are now accessible. I’ve alphabetized it. I spot checked the title and the accessibility. The titles in the list often don’t match the titles on the FindMyPast.com website, adding confusion and decreasing the list’s utility. For the titles I spot-checked, I have corrected the title. Blanks in the notes column are record sets that I did not check. (“Record set” is FMP’s terminology for a record collection.)

I was surprised to see Griffith’s Valuation on the list. I’m pretty unfamiliar with Irish research, but isn’t that a fairly important collection?

I appreciate the many voices pointing out that no one should be whining that some collections are not included. I agree. That is not why I’m providing the list. The utility of the list is to those weighing the option of buying or renewing a full subscription. I appreciate that FindMyPast didn’t immediately transform my paid subscription into an LDS subscription. With the list I know what I still have access to and what I will lose if I don’t renew.

Let me know if you have verified additions or deletions. Please provide the correct title, not the title provided by FMP support. And please respond by posting a comment for all to see rather than replying to my email.

Thanks,
---The Ancestry Insider

  1. Another resource that has just "opened up" in a big way is genealogy books in ebook format.

Amazon recently introduced its Kindle Unlimited program, which allows you to borrow and read as many Kindle ebooks as you like, for $9.95 a month. I wonder if genealogists have grasped what a godsend KU may be. Here's why:

In the genealogy section of the Kindle ebook store on Amazon, along with the how-to-climb-your-family-tree books, there's a huge number of reference and raw-data collections, from histories of specific families to ships' records, newspaper abstracts, etc. The problem with such books in the past has been that you didn't know until after you purchased one (whether a print or a digital copy) if it contained information relevant to your own research.

With Kindle Unlimited, this pig-in-a-poke problem vanishes.

Here's what you could do to further your research without gambling your money on books that may or may not have anything of use in them (to you). With a Kindle Unlimited subscription, you could borrow ten genealogy ebooks (the maximum allowed at one time). Then you could flip through them, or use your Kindle device's search feature, to find
any information of use to you. If you don't find anything, then you can simply return them and borrow ten more.

I know that these days, there are tons of information for ancestor hunters available for free or for a subscription fee at the dedicated genealogy websites such as Ancestry.com. But there's still a lot of data locked up in various small-press books and books by individuals writing their own family's story. Kindle Unlimited gives us genealogists a virtually cost-free and riskless way to unlock those books -- at least the ones that have been committed to ebook format (and you might be surprised how many there are).

By the way, you don't even need a Kindle device to read Kindle books. You can download a free Kindle reading app for your smartphone or laptop that will do the trick. (Also BTW, I do NOT work for Amazon.)

  2. Several users pointed out that Griffith's Valuation is available online, for free. Here's one from Sharon Haggerty:

The Griffiths Valuation is available online and free at:
    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=nameSearch

It also has links to images of both the records and maps showing the locations.

And yes, you are correct, it is a very important Irish resource!
